New Works That You Can Be A Part Of
Both Commissions and Consortiums are great ways to get brand new music to your students. While they both allow your students to be part of the creation process, they do it in slightly different ways.
COMMISSIONS: These are works that are built specifically for your ensemble. Instrumentation, parts featured, and theme are all determined by the group commissioning the piece. The group commissioning the piece also gets the rights to first performance, and their name is included on the published song. The cost of a commission is determined by the difficulty of the song, the needs of the ensemble, the time frame where the piece needs to be finished, and the length of the song. Prices typically range anywhere from $200-$1000 per minute of the final song.
CONSORTIUMS: These are works where multiple groups split the cost of the commission. No group is guaranteed the first performance, but all groups get performance rights prior to the song being released to the public. A group can elect to have their commissioned work become a consortium, in which case they pay a much smaller amount than a full commission price, and then the composer can open the song to anyone else who buys into the song prior to publication. All groups who buy into a consortium get to have their names included in the published edition.
