Program Notes

Western Sketches attempts to portray 2 different pictures of the classic American Western. The first of these 2 sketches is the Cowboy and his horse. The lonesome Cowboy is represented by the solo trumpet, while the horse melody is played within the low brass. The section concludes with the image of the cowboy riding through the western plains.

The second sketch is that of the classic American Western town. Thoughts of the townspeople walking through the streets going about their daily routines. Finally the sketches are merged together as the piece comes to its conclusion. The composition style and form is inspired from the study of classic American composers Stephen Foster, William Schumann, and Aaron Copland.
