Rehearsal Notes
The song follows a simple 4 bar progression (played by the low brass and woodwinds as well as marimba). The percussion parts follow the same 4 measure repeating pattern throughout.
Part are doubled throughout the song, especially on instruments that are not as common in younger ensembles. This was done to allow the song to be playable by smaller ensembles.
Each section contains a melody and a counter melody (mimicking the call and response chants) Take care to ensure that these parts are balanced. Same with percussion, while all of the parts can be doubled for use with larger percussion sections, be careful to not overwhelm the rest of the band.
Program Notes
Pueblo Chants pays homage to the wonderful music of the Pueblo tribe. The music of the Pueblo tribes are among the most recognizable Native American musical styles. The music features heavily on percussion, with multiple layers of percussion instruments creating a unique tapestry of sound and tone color. The melodic contour of the chants are typically following hexatonic or hepatonic patterns, and frequently use grace notes to create the "scoops" that keep the melodic passages flowing. The melody lines used throughout this song are meant to mimic the vocal styles of the Pueblo musicians, using smooth and deliberate delivery that never feels rushed.
