Rehearsal Notes
Mvt. 1 - Lord Licorice and Licorice Castle
The whole song is meant to be a playful, cartoonish bad guy, kind of creeping around the board game.
Keep the articulations light and bouncy throughout
Mvt. 2 - Gloopy and the Molasses Swamp
The whole song is meant to be a peaceful and slow moving monster. It is a great chance to show off the Low Brass/Low Woodwinds.
Watch out for rushing the middle section, it stays at the slow 60 BMP tempo throughout
Mvt. 3 - Princess Lolly and the Candy Cane Forrest
This movement is meant to serve as a feature for the upper woodwind section, with the brass taking a backseat melodically.
Make sure the broken chord progression in the background part doesn’t overwhelm the main melody.
Mvt 4 - King Kandy and Candy Castle
The percussion 2 part is playable by 2 players, with players alternating instruments at measure 52. Feel free to substitute other interesting or playful instruments in this section if you have other fun options available.
Program Notes
Candyland Sweet (intentionally misspelled from the musical term Suite) is a 4 movement work that depicts various characters and locations found in the Board Game of the same name. Candyland was first published in 1949 and while gameplay has remained the same, the characters and locations found throughout the fictional territory have changed slightly.
Movement 1 of Candyland Sweet is based on Lord Licorice and Licorice Castle. Lord Licorice is seen as the villain of the board game, causing mischief and doing his best to slow you down and prevent you from finding King Kandy. Lord Licorice is one of the original characters that has been a part of every version of the Board Game.
Movement 2 of Candyland Sweet is based on Gloppy and the Molasses Swamp. Gloppy was a friendly monster typically made of chocolate or molasses. Gloppy was typically found in the Molasses Swamp, although in later versions of the game the swamp was replaced by the Chocolate Swamp.
Movement 3 of Candyland Sweet portrays Princess Lolly and the Candy Cane Forest. Princess Lolly was one of the original characters, with the Candy Cane Forest also one of the original locations. In 2002 Princess Lolly had the Princess title removed, but it came back in the 2012 edition of the game. The movement tries to bring the picture of the innocent little girl prancing through the forest filled with the sugary snacks.
Movement 4 of Candyland Sweet brings Kind Candy front and center. This final movement symbolizes the goal of the game: to reach Candy Castle. This is the triumphant fanfare that celebrates the completion of the game as well as the coronation of King Candy.
