Joel started his musical career in the Trumbull CT Public School system, where he was active in the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Men's Ensemble, as well as the school's music theory program. While at Trumbull, Joel also participated in the CT Western Region Symphonic Band on multiple occasions. Joel also got the opportunity to perform with the THS Choirs at Carnegie Hall on multiple occasions.

After High School, Joel sought to further his musical education at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT. In his years there he participated in the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Tuba Quartet, Jazz Ensemble, and the Concert Choir. He majored in Music Performance with an emphasis on Euphonium, but also minored in Music Theory and Composition. During this time he was taught by Professor Andrew Rodgers, Dr. Fernando Jimenez, and Dr. Kevin Jay Isaacs.

In performance, Joel was twice selected to the All-New England Intercollegiate Band, where he got a chance to be conducted by Jerry Junkin and Gary Green. He also found a passion for music composition while at WCSU, writing multiple songs and arrangements for the Tuba Quartet, the Brass Ensemble, as well as some solo literature for a range of brass instruments, but mostly for Euphonium.

Joel completed his Master of Music in Music Education from Kent State University in 2012.

While in College, Joel started a side project where he was involved with 2 local Barbershop chorus' (Bridgeport Coastal Chordsmen and the Danbury Mad Hatters). In addition to his involvement with these two ensembles, he also competed on 4 occasions in the Barbershop Harmony Society's Annual College Quartet Contest. His quartets, The Cutting Edge and Conundrum, finished in 2nd place in the Northeastern District 3 times, and finished 1st place in 2001. Joel arranged many of the songs or edited the tags for the Quartets, customizing the music to maximize the vocal ranges of the members of the group.

During this time he also directed the Danbury Mad Hatters Barbershop Chorus, taking them to a Most Improved Award in his first year as director, and to the Small Chorus Championship in his second year with the Chorus.

Since 2005 Joel has worked for Christian Heritage School, Seymour Public Schools, Naugatuck Public Schools, John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury, and Middlesex Middle School in Darien.

At Christian Heritage School Joel was the entire Secondary Music Department, running Jr. High and High School Choirs and Bands, along with a Music Theory and Music History Class. In Seymour, Joel was responsible for the High School Band, Choir, and Music Theory Classes in the morning and the Elementary Band program in the afternoons. In addition to the daily duties, Joel also ran an afterschool Women's Ensemble, and the Pep Band which performed at multiple State Football Championship games. In Naugatuck, he was responsible for the Hillside Middle School Band, and also served as a conductor for all 3 district ensembles at the Bi-Annual Burrough Band Festival.

During his 10 years in Waterbury, the program moved from 2 students to over 100 with separate Concert and Symphonic Bands, an afterschool Jazz Ensemble, along with a Conducting Workshop that saw anywhere from 5-15 students auditioning to conduct the band in the Spring Concert. While at Kennedy High, Joel performed at the Palace Theatre, and his band performed for Senator Ted Kennedy Jr. at the Kennedy High School 50th Anniversary Celebration. It was during his time at Kennedy that Joel rediscovered his passion for music composition, and over the course of his ten years composed at least one new song for Band, and one year composed 4 new songs.

Joel currently works for Darien Public Schools at Middlesex Middle School where he teaches Music Explorations, a general music curriculum he is building that incorporates elements of beginning level guitar and keyboard performance with entry level study on Music Composition and Digital Audio Production. He continues to be active with the Band program at Middlesex and throughout the district, along with occasional appearances at WCSU as a performer and composer.
